Sharing Our Experiences Along the Way

ABOUT US

I don’t know if we found geocaching or it found us.  We were already an outdoors kind of couple with a long list of must see places that we had been working on.   That’s how we happened to be at the Dinosaur Footprints Reservation in Holyoke , MA that day in November of 2006.   There really are fossilized dinosaur tracks if you ever get the urge to take a ride along Route 5 to see for yourself.   There’re loads of them, all leading out of the Connecticut River , which was actually much more of a lake when those creatures were roaming around.

Larry and I met in 2006 and have spent a lot of together time watching our favorite team.  You guessed it….the Boston Red Sox….hence our geocaching name of ‘sox06’.  For two middle-aged ‘youngsters’ we do pretty well.  I’m a nurse, and where I work you can see a wide range of physical abilities at our age.  And that number is…….better left to the imagination.  Suffice to say we’re old enough to remember the first black and white TV and that there was only one in each of our homes.  I’m just glad we’re at that end of the spectrum that still gets us out and about a lot.

A caching day for us never seems to start early enough but we’re usually out there until the sun is about to set, always trying to get one more find before we call it a day.  We manage to get out for some hiking nearly every weekend, sometimes for a short walk, other times for several hours on some pretty rugged terrain.  Getting ready for each of these outings takes researching the geocaching website, deciding where the day will take us, planning which caches seem to be our best choices and downloading coordinates into two GPS’s.  While we work together on all that prep we also each make other contributions to the day according to our own strengths.  I’m probably much too organized but it’s too late to change some things now.  So I’m the statistician, the one who keeps track of each of the caches after we’ve visited them.  I have the where and when of every one we’ve found.  I still have a list of many of our DNF’s – those we never found (it happens!) – and some of the series caches we started that we still need to finish.  My notebooks are starting to add up!  (Hmmm….maybe a good reason for a blog?)   I’m also the team photographer and will be sharing lots of pictures including the one currently on our home page.  Larry is the color person.  His work as a civil engineer with the USDA, Natural Resources Conservation Service for almost 40 years has brought him to nearly every town and city in Massachusetts .  He’s something of an expert on dams and waterways and can add some anecdotal information to most cache locations.  He always knows where we are on the roads and with his roll of orange flagging makes sure we don’t get lost out in the depths of the woods.  Larry’s also the one who’ll keep us moving even if the weather isn’t ideal.  I’d be the one who might curl up on the couch with a good book waiting for a better day.

Two and a half years ago we’d never heard the word geocaching; today it’s become a huge part of our lives.  We love the hiking, the hunt, and the moving of trackable items.  We love finding hidden places we might never have seen.  Some of those offer science or history lessons, and some are just pretty little spots.  They’re all fun.  We hope you’ll visit our site again to just read or maybe offer comments or share experiences of your own.  Thanks for stopping by.  We hope to see you on the trails someday.

Happy caching!
